Spring Thaw Drainage Checklist for Central Wisconsin Property Owners

Spring thaw is the single hardest test any property's drainage will face all year. Frozen ground can't absorb meltwater, which means problems that stayed hidden all winter often show up fast — and sometimes all at once. Here's what to check before it becomes a bigger issue.
1. Walk Your Property After the First Big Melt
Before everything greens up and hides the evidence, walk your yard, driveway, and any ditches on your property right after a significant thaw. Standing water, eroded spots, and soggy low areas are much easier to spot now than in July.
2. Check Your Foundation and Basement
Look for dampness, water stains, or actual standing water in your basement or crawl space — especially right after a thaw event. This is the clearest early sign of a foundation drainage issue that's likely to repeat every spring until it's addressed.
3. Look at Your Driveway
Heaving, cracking, or new potholes that showed up over winter usually point to water getting trapped under the surface and expanding as it freezes and thaws. A driveway that's showing this kind of damage repeatedly may need more than a patch — it may need the base rebuilt properly.
4. Inspect Ditches and Culverts
If you have a ditch or culvert on your property, check that it's actually flowing and not blocked by debris, ice remnants, or sediment buildup. A culvert that can't keep up with spring runoff volume can back up quickly and cause erosion or flooding nearby.
5. Note Any Areas That Flood Every Year
If the same spot on your property floods every spring even though it's fine the rest of the year, that's not bad luck — it's a pattern. These recurring spots are exactly what drain tile, ditching, or regrading are built to permanently fix, rather than waiting it out again next year.
6. Plan Drainage Work Before You Need It, Not During
Spring is also our busiest season for drainage calls, for obvious reasons. If you know a spot on your property floods every year, getting ahead of it — even scheduling an assessment in late winter — gives you more flexibility than calling the week your basement is wet.
