Pond Restoration: 800 Yards of Muck & Island Removal in Marshfield, WI

ERE Excavation | 233119 Co Rd F, Abbotsford, WI 54405 | (715) 613-0011

The Challenge

A pond on a Marshfield property had silted in over time, accumulating roughly 800 yards of muck and sediment. The buildup had progressed far enough that an island had actually formed within the pond — a clear sign the water body had lost most of its functional depth and was well on its way to no longer being a pond at all.

Our Approach

This was a job for ERE's heavy equipment division, not standard excavation equipment — moving 800 yards of accumulated muck, much of it waterlogged and difficult to handle, called for the larger machinery and capacity our standard residential and commercial equipment isn't built for. The crew excavated the muck and the island material, restoring the pond's original depth and footprint.

The Result

What had become a shrinking, silted-in water feature is now restored to a functional pond — depth and capacity recovered, with the muck and island material removed from the site entirely rather than just pushed to one side.

Common Questions

  • How do you know when a pond needs restoration versus just maintenance?

Visible signs include a shrinking open-water area, islands or shoals forming from sediment buildup, and noticeably reduced depth compared to when the pond was dug. Pond maintenance (covered under our Additional Services) handles ongoing vegetation and minor sediment control; a project like this one is for a pond that's already lost significant function.

  • Where does the removed material go?

Depending on volume and site conditions, muck and sediment are either spread on-site in an area that can handle it or hauled off — this is assessed project by project.
