DOT-Standard Culvert & Driveway Project in Unity, WI
ERE Excavation | 233119 Co Rd F, Abbotsford, WI 54405 | (715) 613-0011
The Challenge
A property owner in Unity needed a culvert lowered and replaced, their driveway widened, and the roadside ditching brought up to DOT standard — all on the same property, all needing to work together rather than as separate disconnected fixes. Culvert work along a road right-of-way has to meet a higher bar than a typical property-line ditch, since it ties directly into public road drainage.
Our Approach
We lowered and replaced the existing culvert, widened and expanded the driveway to the owner's specification, and ran precision ditching built to DOT standard — including erosion matting and rip rap around the culvert to protect it from washout. We documented the project through completion, including a follow-up visit to confirm how the finished work held up.
The Result
A culvert and driveway system that meets DOT standard for slope, erosion control, and durability — not just a quick patch, but a job built to hold up over time along an active roadway. The before-and-after documentation on this project makes it one of the clearest examples of our full-scope capability: drainage, grading, and driveway work completed together as one coordinated job.

Common Questions
What does it mean for culvert work to be built to "DOT standard"?
It means the slope, sizing, and erosion control meet the specifications the Department of Transportation requires for culverts along road rights-of-way — a higher bar than a standard property drainage ditch, since it has to hold up under road runoff and traffic conditions.
Can you combine driveway work with culvert and ditching work in one project?
Yes — this is often the most efficient way to handle it, since driveway grading and roadside culvert/ditching work directly affect each other.
Do you document projects with before-and-after photos?
When possible, yes — this Unity project is a good example, with a follow-up visit to show how the finished work held up over time.
